SELF-RETRACTING FALL ARRESTORS / FALL ARREST BLOCKS  / INERTIA REELS

A Retractable Fall Arrester – also commonly known as Inertia Reels or Fall Arrest Blocks,  comprise a retractable lanyard made of wire rope or webbing which is stored on a reel within a protective Steel, Aluminium or Plastic housing.

The reel is spring-biased so as to wind the retractable lifeline ensuring that it is always under a light restraining tension paying-out the shortest possible length between the housing and the user.

The reel incorporates an inertial clutch mechanism which allows the lifeline to slowly extract and retract automatically with the user’s body movements.

In the event of a fall, the lifeline  rapidly extracts until it reaches its  “lock-on speed when the clutch locks simultaneously activating a braking mechanism that decelerates the user over a short distance bringing  them  to a complete stop where they remain suspended to await rescue

Fall arrest systems and equipment, act to arrest a fall and are used in situations where, if the user loses controlled physical contact with the working surface, there will be a free fall

In situations where the user is likely to need to turn round repeatedly under the anchor point, a Fall Arrestor with a swivel fitting should be used to avoid twisting of the lifeline.

Fall Arrestor with Rescue / Recovery Function

Most commonly used for Confined Space allocations, a Fall Arrest Block with a Recovery Mechanism  self-retracting fall arrest block that comes with an integral rescue recovery winch facility enables the rescuer to raise or lower the casualty in an emergency.

After an arrested fall, or if the user becomes incapacitated at the bottom of a shaft, the recovery mechanism is engaged by a second person to raise or lower the person to a place of safety.
