Retractable fall arresters function like a car seat belt, a re-coiling main spring keeps the lifeline in light tension, allowing it to respond in the event of a fall.

If the extraction speed of the lifeline exceeds 0.5m/sec, the brake system is activated and will lock into place. resulting in the deceleration of the faller.

The faller will initially travel vertically until tensioning of the fall arrest system occurs. At this moment the faller will begin a swing fall which will bring him under the anchorage and beyond, leading to collision with anything in his path.

A worker using a self retracting lifeline device should operate in an arc no more that thirty degrees from the anchorage point.

Anchor Points for Fall Arrest

It is strongly recommended to plan anchorage points so that the user can operate within a horizontal distance no greater than the equivalent of 30 degrees from it.
The implication of working beyond this distance is the risk of pendulum swing which puts the user at risk of collision with any object in his way.

Pendulum swing will occur in a fall event if the anchorage point is not located directly above the fallers head.
